Zhangjing Huaiyun (756-815) gave this brief talk on the essence of Zen. It’s from Andrew Ferguson’s Zen’s Chinese Heritage (Boston: Wisdom, 2000). He was a disciple and later Dharma heir of Mazu. At the emperor’s request, he eventually resided in the capital city of Changan at Zhangjing Temple.
Being is unconditioned existence. Opening to it is the portal to living wisely or well.
